ABSTRACT

This paper presents an extensive investigation of the influence of key mechanical and geometrical parameters on the horizontal impedance of circular foundation resting on two-layered soil deposit. The parameters investigated are the ratio of shear modulus, ratio of shear wave velocity, the thickness of the top layer, material damping ratio and Poisson’s ratio. The results are presented in the form of dimensionless graphs, which may prove to be useful in understanding the steady state harmonic response of circular foundations on layered soil under horizontal excitation. The investigation was conducted using a simple method i.e. one dimensional wave propagation in cones taking into consideration the reflection and refraction at layer interface and free surface. Linear hysteretic material damping was introduced using corresponding principle.
