ABSTRACT

This paper describes a study on the effect of cement admixtures on the index and engineering properties (compaction and unconfined strength) of tropical peat soils. The ordinary Portland cement was used. The amounts cement added to the peat soil sample, as percentage of the dry soil mass were in the range of 3% – 15%. The results of the study showed that the addition of the cement admixture could improve the engineering properties of tropical peat soils. The soil liquid limit was found to decrease with increased in the cement content. The soil maximum dry density was found to increase while the optimum water content was found to decrease with increased in the cement content. The unconfined compressive strength of the soil was found to increase significantly with increased in the cement, especially after a long curing period. However it was also found that higher organic content of the soil negate the positive effect of the cement in altering (improving) the mechanical properties of the soil.
