Subject: LANDSLIDE SWEDEN
------------------------------- Message Contents -------------------------------
LANDSLIDE IN VAGNHAERAD, SOUTHERN SWEDEN

A major landslide occurred on May 23 in the village of Vagnhaerad, about
100 km south of Stockholm, destroying more than 15 houses and injuring 4
people. More than 100 inhabitants had to be evacuated.

At 1 o'clock in the morning on May 23, a major land slide affected an area
several hundred meters long and causing lateral
displacements of up to 40 m. The slide took place several days after a
period
of extended rainfall. The area had previously been investigated by
geotechnical engineers and judged to be safe. Three days prior to the
landslide, a minor slip had occurred towards the Trosa river. Geotechnical
investigations were then carried out.

The soil deposit consists of a 2 m thick dry crust on top of an up to 10 m
thick clay layer. At the bottom of the clay stratum, layers of silt and clay
occur. The rock surface below the clay deposit is inclined at an angle of
about 10m degrees. The soil deposit did not contain clays with high
sensitivity, which most likely would have lead to larger displacements and
many casualties.

The location of the landslide is not too far from Getaa, where a large
landslide occurred in 1917. As a result of the Get? disaster, the Swedish
Geotechnical Commission was created.
